Elk Rapids Township is a township located in Antrim County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,741. The village of Elk Rapids is located within the township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 28.3 km² (10.9 mi²). 18.4 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 9.9 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 34.92% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,741 people, 1,206 households, and 811 families residing in the township. The population density is 148.8/km² (385.3/mi²). There are 1,763 housing units at an average density of 95.7/km² (247.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.67% White, 0.22% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,206 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.78.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older.
