El País ("The country") is the most widely read Spanish newspaper with 2,098,000 readers, followed by El Mundo with 1,291,000 readers, according to the 2005's Estudio General de Medios (Media General Study).
It first appeared on 4 May 1976, when Spain was still in its transition towards democracy. It is part of the media conglomerate Grupo Prisa managed by Jesús de Polanco.
In 1989, El País initiated several projects of collaboration with other newspapers in Europe. It participates in a joint network of informative resources with La Repubblica (Italy) and Le Monde (France). Since October 2001 a supplement in English of El País is included in the Spanish version of the International Herald Tribune. In May 4, 2004 The New York Times announced the launch of its New York Times International Weekly in El País together with this other european newspapers.
Its ideology has usually been aligned with the Socialist Party.
