The USAF created the Eighteenth Air Force to serve as an intermediate echelon of command for extensive troop carrier operations within Tactical Air Command in March 1951. Later, the Eighteenth AF received other combat units in addition to troop carrier wings.
While the Twelfth Air Force absorbed all of the resources of the Eighteenth on January 1, 1958; the Eighteenth Air Force (headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.) was reactivated October 1, 2003, as the warfighting component of the Air Mobility Command.Template:Mil-stub
