Sir Edmund Sutton Baron Tibetot and Cherlton, Knight of Dudley Castle and Gatescombe (b.1425-d.1483), and the brother of John Dudley of Atherington (who was himself the grandfather of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland).
John of Atherington's son Edmund (b.1462 d.1510) was first married to Elizabeth Grey, whom after this Edmund Dudley's execution wed Artur Plantagenet.
Sir Edmund Sutton was born in Dudley, England, a son of John Sutton, 1st Baron Dudley, K.G. His wife was the grand daughter of John Talbot, Baron Lisle.
John Sutton Dudley (Edmund's father) wed, after 1422, Elizabeth, the daughter of John Berkeley. Their children were Edmund, Katherine Sutton, Margaret Sutton, William Sutton (later Bishop of Durham), Jane Sutton, Oliver Sutton, Eleanor Sutton, and John Dudley, Esq., of Atherington, Sussex, who became Sheriff of Sussex and Surrey in 1484/5.
By right of his (Edmund's) first wife, the family title was passed to her as the third and youngest daughter of lord Sir John de Tibertot, the sister and heir to John, her brother, the Earl of Worcester by her mother, Joyce, the daughter of Edward lord Cherleton. From this association came the quartering of Edmund of Woodstock, earl of Kent, youngest son of King Edward I of England, through the families of Holland, Cherleton and Tibertot to the Dudley family.
Edmund Sutton's exact date of death is not known, but it was after July 6, 1483. He had a son Edward, (b.1459), who was to become the 2nd lord Dudley.
