Edgemont Park is an unincorporated community within Lansing Charter Township in Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,442.
The area is located to the west of the city of Lansing. The CDP is most the area north of Saginaw St. (Michigan State Highway 43), west of the railroad tracks marking the western Lansing city limits, south of the Grand River, and east of the county line.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,442 people, 1,081 households, and 700 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,109.2/km² (2,881.1/mi²). There are 1,114 housing units at an average density of 506.0/km² (1,314.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 85.09% White, 7.53% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.95% from other races, and 3.03% from two or more races. 6.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,081 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.76.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 86.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,173, and the median income for a family is $54,566. Males have a median income of $39,474 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $23,981. 5.5% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line.
