Eddystone is a borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,442.
Eddystone was the site of the Baldwin Locomotive Works plant, the largest manufacturer of steam locomotives in the world.
Geography
Eddystone is located at 39°51'34" North, 75°20'27" West (39.859345, -75.340920)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.67% water.
Eddystone gets it's name from the English Pilgrims who settled in America - the Eddystone Lighthouse being the main lighthouse off the coast of Plymouth, where the Mayflower departed.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,442 people, 964 households, and 607 families residing in the borough. The population density is 906.6/km² (2,352.6/mi²). There are 1,035 housing units at an average density of 384.2/km² (997.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 95.45% White, 1.76% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 964 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.8% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.24.
In the borough the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.
The median income for a household in the borough is $37,543, and the median income for a family is $47,054. Males have a median income of $36,422 versus $25,069 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $16,537. 12.1% of the population and 11.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.1% of those under the age of 18 and 16.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
