Eatonton is a city located in Putnam County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,764. The city is the county seat of Putnam CountyTemplate:GR.

Eatonton's claims to fame are its status as "Dairy Capital of Georgia" (in honor of its major industry, dairy farming), and being the birthplace of both Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple) and Joel Chandler Harris (journalist and author of the Uncle Remus stories).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 53.6 km² (20.7 mi²). 53.3 km² (20.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,764 people, 2,442 households, and 1,706 families residing in the city. The population density is 127.0/km² (329.1/mi²). There are 2,668 housing units at an average density of 50.1/km² (129.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 37.49% White, 59.33% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.35% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,442 households out of which 34.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.4% are married couples living together, 24.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,391, and the median income for a family is $31,571. Males have a median income of $26,703 versus $20,013 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,993. 25.1% of the population and 20.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
