East Haddam is a town located in Middlesex County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,333.
Christopher Dodd, one of Connecticut's two Senators, lives in East Haddam when Congress is not in session. Joseph Spencer, a lawyer, soldier, and statesman during the Revolutionary War, was born and died in East Haddam.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 146.5 km² (56.6 mi²). 140.7 km² (54.3 mi²) of it is land and 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.96% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,333 people, 3,174 households, and 2,285 families residing in the town. The population density is 59.2/km² (153.4/mi²). There are 4,015 housing units at an average density of 28.5/km² (73.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.26% White, 0.84% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,174 households out of which 35.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.3% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 33.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older.
