Dunkirk is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York in the USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,387.
The Town of Dunkirk surrounds the City of Dunkirk, which is not a part of the town.

History
The Town of Dunkirk was established in 1859.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.3 km² (6.3 mi²). 16.2 km² (6.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.79% water.
The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) passes through the town.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,387 people, 519 households, and 333 families residing in the town. The population density is 85.8/km² (222.1/mi²). There are 602 housing units at an average density of 37.2/km² (96.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.16% White, 2.24% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 4.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 519 households out of which 22.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% are non-families. 30.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.78.
In the town the population is spread out with 15.6% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 20.3% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 31.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $33,553, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $32,692 versus $23,194 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,124. 11.7% of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
