Draconian (Dragonlance)

Draconians are a fictional species in the Dragonlance setting of novels and role-playing games. Draconians are humanoids with dragon-like features. Each race of draconians is patterned after a different race of dragons.

Draconians are created through the use of a mold that grows on a race of dwarves on the continent of Ansalon. The mold is put onto dragon eggs; three draconians come out per egg. The first eggs to have this done were bronze dragon eggs.

There are five distinct draconian species, one for each type of metallic (good) dragon. The races are: Baaz (brass), Kapak (copper), Bozak (bronze), Sivak (silver) and Aurak (gold).

Draconian death throes

When a draconian dies, its death carries a side effect, which at times may be deadly.

  • Baaz: When Baaz Draconians die they turn into stone, sometimes trapping within them the weapon that killed them.
  • Kapak: Kapaks dissolve into a pool of acid when they die.
  • Bozak: When lethal damage has been dealt to them, these spell-casting draconians explode in a ball of magical fire.
  • Sivak: The shape-shifting, flying Draconians take the form of their slayer when killed. This is sometimes referred to as the "Death Shape" and it lasts for three days after which the draconian's body dissolves.
  • Aurak: These draconians become perhaps more lethal in death than they were in life. When killed, Auraks immediately regain their lost health (hit points) and attack with frenzy. While losing all magical powers they previously had, they are still lethal in hand to hand combat. After they are killed again they immolate and ignite everything that touches them or so much as comes near them. They are immune to damage in this form. After a few rounds Auraks explode in a ball of magical fire similar to their smaller Bozak brothers.

Noble Draconians

There is also a much rarer breed of Draconians, formed when, in desperation, the Dragonarmies began to use the eggs of chromatic dragons for the rituals.

Surprisingly, just as the eggs of good dragons had yielded evil draconians, the eggs of evil dragons produced good draconians.

There are five distinct noble draconian species, one for each type of chromatic (evil) dragon. The races are: Frost (white), Venom (black), Vapor (green), Lightning (blue) and Flame (red).
