Dntel is an electronic music artist, real name Jimmy Tamborello, also known as James Figurine, the co-programmer and vocalist for the Electro-Pop band Figurine (which was inspired by, and often regarded as a take-off of Depeche Mode) and bassist for the "enocore" band Strictly Ballroom, who also contributed to The Postal Service with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.
Name
Dntel is pronounced din-tell, and has been admitted by the artist to mean nothing until the release of Life Is Full of Possibilities, when he released that the name is a shortened version of "don't tell," although Tamborello admits that this meaning is a vast stretch.
History
Dntel is the solo career and/or pseudonym of Jimmy (James) Tamborello. His operation under the mantra Dntel began in 1994. At this time, Tamborello was still the bassist for Strictly Ballroom, a band labeled as "Enocore," due to the method in which they combined the sounds of Brian Eno and hardcore music. He was also attempting to further his electro-pop project Figurine. As a pioneer of contemporary glitch and electronica, Dntel gained a cult following. He released his first full-length album Life Is Full of Possibilities on October 30, 2001. The album contained a slew of guests, playing vocals, guitar, and others, including Ben Gibbard, of Death Cab for Cutie, Mia Doi Todd, fellow Figurine Member Meredith Figurine, Chris Gunst of Beachwood Sparks, Brian McMahan of Slint and The For Carnation, and Rachel Haden of That Dog. The most well-received song was the Gibbard collaboration (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan, which led to a single, released August 6, 2002, and later, the forming of the band The Postal Service.
