Digital hardcore is a music genre or style that was first defined by Alec Empire. The name of this genre is equal to the record company that Alec Empire set up in the early nineties, which is Digital Hardcore Recordings. Digital hardcore reached the peak of its mainstream popularity in the mid-1990s and spawned a rapid growth in labels specializing in the genre, but has since regressed to "underground" status. The vast majority of digital hardcore music comes from Germany, the home of Digital Hardcore Recordings.
Digital hardcore is an abrasive and typically electronic music, created with samplers and drum machines. The music is a combination of techno, electro, drum and bass, and punk rock. It also has close ties to noise music.
Some of the most popular digital hardcore acts are Atari Teenage Riot (Empire's own band), EC8OR, Bomb 20, Cobra Killer, Tuareg Geeks, Christoph de Babalon, and Shizuo.
