Dickson Township is a civil township of Manistee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 929.
Most of the township lies within the Manistee National Forest. The unincorporated community of Brethren is in the western part of the township. The Manistee River runs through the eastern and souther portions, with the Tippy Dam forming the Tippy Dam Pond along the south-central boundary.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 185.7 km² (71.7 mi²). 181.5 km² (70.1 mi²) of it is land and 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.29% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 929 people, 364 households, and 259 families residing in the township. The population density is 5.1/km² (13.3/mi²). There are 660 housing units at an average density of 3.6/km² (9.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.88% White, 0.22% African American, 1.08% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 364 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the township the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.7 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $33,309, and the median income for a family is $34,545. Males have a median income of $27,656 versus $20,781 for females.
