Dickenson County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 16,395. Its county seat is Clintwood6.

History
Dickenson County, formed in 1880 from parts of Buchanan County, Russell County, and Wise County, is Virginia's youngest county. It was named for William J. Dickenson, delegate to the Virginia General Assembly from Russell County, 1859-1861, 1865-1867, and 1877-1882.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 864 km² (334 mi²). 859 km² (332 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

The county is divided into five supervisor districts: Clintwood, Ervinton, Kenady, Sand Lick, and Willis.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,395 people, 6,732 households, and 4,887 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 7,684 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.96% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,732 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the county, the population is spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $23,431, and the median income for a family is $27,986. Males have a median income of $27,281 versus $17,695 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,822. 21.30% of the population and 16.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.80% of those under the age of 18 and 17.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
