Den Fortapte sønn (en. The lost son) written by Norwegian author and philosopher Peter Wessel Zapffe (1889-1990) in 1951, is a dramatized reproduction of the circumstances around the Jesus figure, named Immanuel in Zapffe's playwright.
Plot
A short summary: The point of origin is a dramatical biography of the life of Jesus, influenced by the philosophical thoughts represented in the essay Den sidste Messias (en. The last Messiah) published in 1930 and Zapffe's philosophical treatise, Om det tragiske (en. On the tragic) published in 1941. Jesus had, as the majority of the people that has or is living, misinterpreted what it means to be a human on our earth. He produced the treachery towards himself to fulfil the prophecies of the Messiah according to the teachings through which he wanted to apprehend what was rightfully his: the throne of Pilatus. Zapffe thought Jesus was fully convinced he was the only son of Pilatus alive, hence his only heir (except for Salomé). Judah plays a crucial role in the play, growing up as Jesus' best friend. It could be argued that Judah's speaches in the introduction is close to Zapffe's own feelings on christianity.
The play has never been set up because of its extensive character. Including entire cities with massive buildings, it requires masses of people.
Science
The scientific grounds of Zapffe's studies of the Jesus-figure, and the results of this, have been tested according to hermeneutical principles. Allthough colourful, it's little doubt the interpretation of the material fulfills these principles and should therefore be considered scientific. In the foreword Zapffe explains that the dramatic character of the material he'd gathered made him decide that a playwright was the best solution. Zapffe is said to have considered Jesus to be western culture's most tragic character, according to his findings presented in his treatise On the tragic (1941) and the definition of the objectively tragical.
His findings were later presented in his autobiography of, or a longer essay about, Jesus called Rikets hemmelighet (en. The secret of the kingdom) of 1985.
