Decatur is a city located in Adams County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,528. The city is the county seat of Adams CountyTemplate:GR. This town is named after war hero Stephen Decatur, Jr. It was founded in 1836.

Decatur is located at 40°49'46" North, 84°55'45" West (40.829581, -84.929185)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.7 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.20% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,528 people, 3,960 households, and 2,570 families residing in the city. The population density is 747.7/km² (1,935.4/mi²). There are 4,190 housing units at an average density of 328.8/km² (851.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.64% White, 0.24% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 3.58% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 7.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,960 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $37,234, and the median income for a family is $44,722. Males have a median income of $31,819 versus $24,310 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,186. 7.7% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Interesting Facts
Decatur is the home of the world's first monument dedicated exclusively to peace. It stands in the yard of the Adams County Court House.
The local high school in Decatur is Bellmont High School. Approximately 900 students attend BHS. Its mascots are the Braves and Squaws.
A major annual event is the Callithumpian Parade, which is held on the night of the last Monday in October.
