De Tour Village, Michigan

De Tour Village is a village located in Chippewa County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 421.
The village is at the extreme eastern tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in Detour Township, at the turning point for the shipping channel connecting the St. Mary's River with Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac. Drummond Island, one of the largest islands in the St. Mary's River, is only one mile across the river from De Tour.
It was originally named Warrenville in 1848 after Ebenezer Warren, the first postmaster in the township. The name was changed to De Tour on July 25, 1856, when a new postmaster, Henry A. Williams, assumed office. De Tour was incorporated as De Tour Village in 1961 (the word "Village" is a part of the village's name).
Michigan State Highway 134 runs through the village, connecting with Interstate 75 43 miles to the west and with Michigan State Highway 129 25 miles to the west, which runs north 37 miles to Sault Ste. Marie. M-134 also continues east to Drummond Island via the Drummond Island Ferry.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 21.8 km² (8.4 mi²). 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is land and 12.6 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 57.67% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 421 people, 200 households, and 116 families residing in the village. The population density is 45.7/km² (118.2/mi²). There are 307 housing units at an average density of 33.3/km² (86.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 82.42% White, 0.00% African American, 14.01% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 3.56% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 200 households out of which 15.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.0% are non-families. 38.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.73.
In the village the population is spread out with 17.6% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 19.2% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.1 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $31,250, and the median income for a family is $45,104. Males have a median income of $27,188 versus $33,125 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,967. 10.4% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
