Dansville, Livingston County, New York

Dansville is a village located in Livingston County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 4,832. The village is named after Daniel Faulkner, an early settler.

The Village of Dansville is in the Town of North Dansville, New York in the eastern part of the county.

History

Daniel Faulkner (Captain Dan Faulkner, militia officer) founded the village in 1795. When Livingston County was created, the village was in the Town of Sparta. A spa drew many prominent people for the water cure, which opened in 1854.

Geography

Dansville is located at 42°33'43" North, 77°41'46" West (42.561828, -77.696037)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.1 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.1 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

The Town of Dansville is located south of the village, but it is in Steuben County, New York.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,832 people, 1,912 households, and 1,246 families residing in the village. The population density is 787.2/km² (2,042.4/mi²). There are 2,090 housing units at an average density of 340.5/km² (883.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.78% White, 1.26% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 2.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,912 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the village the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $32,903, and the median income for a family is $41,519. Males have a median income of $31,699 versus $25,256 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,994. 17.0% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Facts about Dansville

Dansville Municipal Airport (DSV) is a general aviation airport located north of the village. Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in Dansville. Dansville is at the northern edge of the range of the American dogwood (Cornus florida), and celebrates this with a Dogwood Festival each spring.
