Dannemora (village), New York

Dannemora is a village located primarily in the Town of Dannemora in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 4,129. The name is derived from early settlers from Sweden, related to a type of spruce tree.

Most of the village is in the Town of Dannemora, but the south part of the Dannemora village is located in the Town of Saranac. The community is on the town line, located on Route 374. The postal zip code is 12929.

History

The Village of Dannemora was incorporated in 1901. Permanent settlement had begun in 1838. Clinton Prison (Currently Clinton Correctional Facility) was opened in 1845.

Geography

Dannemora is located at 44°43'15" North, 73°43'8" West (44.720878, -73.718904)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

The village is at the south town line and is partly in the Town of Saranac. Dannemora is within the Adirondack State Park.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,129 people, 469 households, and 326 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,317.5/km² (3,423.2/mi²). There are 516 housing units at an average density of 164.7/km² (427.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 49.07% White, 37.95% Black or African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 10.49% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 18.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 469 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 15.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% are non-families. 23.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the village the population is spread out with 8.9% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 58.2% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 525.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 682.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $42,500, and the median income for a family is $47,019. Males have a median income of $24,753 versus $24,286 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,872. 14.5% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
