The Honourable Daniel Phillip Hays (born April 24 1939) is a Canadian politician and current Speaker of the Canadian Senate. He is the son of Harry Hays, who served as minister of agriculture in Lester Pearson's government.
He was educated initially at Appleby College, Oakville, before receiving a B.A. from the University of Alberta and an LL.B. from the University of Toronto. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 1966, and became known as a prominent lawyer and cattle-rancher.
Dan Hays was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau on April 29, 1984, to represent Alberta (Calgary). He was appointed as Speaker by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien in January 2001. He is fourth in line of Canadian order of precedence.
He has also served as president of the Liberal Party of Canada.
