Dr. Daniel Pauly is a Professor and Director of the Fisheries Centre. Some of his primary work involves documenting the effects of overfishing. He authored a book entitled In a Perfect Ocean. For thus working to protect the environment, he earned a place in the 2003 Scientific American 50.
Early in his career, Pauly developed new methods for estimating fish populations. Later, he helped to develop FishBase. To date, he frequently expresses opinions about public policy. Specifically, he argues that governments should abolish subsidies to fishing fleets and establish marine reserves.
