Unlike most Jewish leaders, Cohn-Sherbok is sympathetic to Messianic Judaism and Secular Humanistic Judaism, as well as the Order of the Lotus (which purports to be a Jewish-Buddhist synthesis). In his view, Judaism today is pluraform in nature: no longer is there a overarching authority which can determine correct belief and practice. As a consequence, the Jewish community has splintered into a variety of subgroups, ranging from the strictly Orthodox to the most liberal; in addition, some groups have syncretistically borrowed from other religious traditions.
Born in Denver, Colorado, he was a student at Williams College, Massachusetts, the Hebrew Union College, Ohio, and received a doctorate in philosophy from Cambridge University in England. He received a doctorate in divinity from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, New York. In addition to his current position at the University of Wales, Lampeter, he has served as Visiting Professor at the Universities of Essex, Middlesex, St. Andrews University, Durham, and Vilnius.
Cohn-Sherbok is the author and editor of over 70 books, including The Jewish Faith, Modern Judaism, Atlas of Jewish History, Anti-Semitism, Dictionary of Judaism and Christianity, The Crucified Jew, Judaism: History, Belief and Practice, The Vision of Judaism: Wrestling with God, Jewish and Christian Mysticism, Holocaust Theology, Interfaith Theology: A Reader, The Palestine-Israeli Conflict, Judaism and Other Faiths, Messianic Judaism, and World Religions and Human Liberation, Judaism: History, Belief and Practice, and The Vision of Judaism.
