DDR-Oberliga
|
DDR-Oberliga (DDR Upper League) was, prior to the reunification with West Germany, the elite competition in East Germany in various different sports, including football and handball. In East Germany, the Oberligas were roughly similar to the West German Bundesligas.
Football
The elite football competition, which began in 1950 as the DS-Oberliga (Deutscher Sportausschuss, English: German Sports Association). Starting from 1958, it carried the name Football Oberliga DFV. After the reunification, 1990-91 was the last regular Oberliga season, under the designation NOFV Oberliga. Following that season, the league was folded into the West German football Bundesliga.
The Oberliga was run, since the 1954-55 season, with 14 teams and 2 relegation spots. Between 1956 and 1960, the Oberliga was based on the Soviet model, with the competition run from spring to autumn. Therefore, in 1955, a transition round was necessary; this competition was not counted as a championship. 1961 saw a return to an autumn-spring season, and the 1961-62 season saw each team play each other 3 times (once home, once away and once at a neutral venue). The championship record with 10 titles is Berliner FC Dynamo.
