Geography

Cranston is located at 41°46'24" North, 71°27'12" West (41.773200, -71.453289)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 77.5 km² (29.9 mi²). 74.0 km² (28.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.54% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 79,269 people, 30,954 households, and 20,243 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,071.3/km² (2,774.6/mi²). There are 32,068 housing units at an average density of 433.4/km² (1,122.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.19% White, 3.69% African American, 0.30% Native American, 3.28% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.93% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 4.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,954 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $44,108, and the median income for a family is $55,241. Males have a median income of $40,031 versus $28,279 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,978. 7.3% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Transportation

Cranston has four freeways - I-95, I-295, RI 10 (the Huntington Expressway) and RI 37, as well as the arterial RI 2. Other state-numbered roads in Cranston are US 1, US 1A, RI 5, RI 12, RI 33, RI 51, RI 115 and RI 117.

Like the rest of Rhode Island, Cranston is served by Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) buses. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor passes through but does not have a station in Cranston.
