Cranbourne, Victoria

Cranbourne is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Casey.
Cranbourne was the site of the old shire of Cranbourne offices, (the building is still existant on the corner of the South Gippsland Highway and the Frankston - Cranbourne road). The area was greatly opened up by settlers from the 1860's. Progress in developing the land around Cranbourne was hampered by the Koo-wee-rup swampland. However William Lyall (who bought land in the swamp area) assisted in organsing the draining of the swamp to make it useable as farmland.
In the south of Cranbourne is the Cranbourne Royal Botanical Gardens, and the Racecourse/Recreation Reserve. Cranbourne also contains the Amstel Golf Club and a swimming pool
Schools in Cranbourne include St Peters Catholic Co-Educational College, St Agatha's Catholic School, Cranbourne Secondary College, Cranbourne Christian Community College, Cranbourne Primary School, Rangebank Primary School and the Cranbourne Specialist School. Chisholm TAFE also has a campus in Cranbourne, to the city's east. To cater for the growth in Cranbourne (the suburb has one of the highest numbers of children under 14) several primary schools will be proposed.
Retail in Cranbourne includes the Thompson Parkway Shopping Centre, the Great Southern Home Centre, Cranbourne Park Shopping centre.
The MRA Cranbourne GP Run (http://www.mraa.org.au/index.php?option=displaypage&Itemid=61&op=page&SubMenu=) is held each year on the Saturday of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.
