Cortez is a census-designated place located in Manatee County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,491.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.3 km² (5.1 mi²). 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 57.20% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,491 people, 2,373 households, and 1,468 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 791.8/km² (2,047.7/mi²). There are 3,308 housing units at an average density of 583.2/km² (1,508.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.33% White, 0.16% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,373 households out of which 9.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.89 and the average family size is 2.29.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 8.6% under the age of 18, 2.4% from 18 to 24, 13.8% from 25 to 44, 30.7% from 45 to 64, and 44.6% who are 65 years of age or older.
