Conway, South Carolina

Conway is a city located in Horry County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,788. It is the county seat of Horry CountyTemplate:GR.

Conway, SC, the county seat of Horry County, is located at 33°50'17" North, 79°3'22" West (33.838093, -79.056101)Template:GR. It is situated in the South Carolina Coastal Plain, on the western banks of the Waccamaw River, and is approx. 25km from the Atlantic Ocean.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.7 km² (13.4 mi²). 32.9 km² (12.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.08% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,788 people, 4,259 households, and 2,942 families residing in the city. The population density is 358.1/km² (927.8/mi²). There are 4,783 housing units at an average density of 145.3/km² (376.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 55.82% White, 41.85% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,259 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% are married couples living together, 23.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 15.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 83.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,155, and the median income for a family is $39,189. Males have a median income of $26,720 versus $21,310 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,611. 20.2% of the population and 15.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.9% of those under the age of 18 and 16.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
