Columbus Township is a civil township in St. Clair County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,615.
Communities
- The unincorporated community of Belle River is on Gratiot Road, just southwest of where it crosses the Belle River in section 32 in the southeast of the township. It is about 17 miles southwest of Port Huron at Template:Coor dms. The FIPS place code is 07000. The elevation is 670 feet above sea level.
- The unincorporated community of Columbus is between sections 10 and 11 in the northeast of the township, on Rattle Run Road between Rattle Run and Memphis. Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 96.5 km² (37.2 mi²). 96.1 km² (37.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,615 people, 1,533 households, and 1,266 families residing in the township. The population density is 48.0/km² (124.4/mi²). There are 1,595 housing units at an average density of 16.6/km² (43.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.01% White, 0.09% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,533 households out of which 42.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.5% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 13.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.00 and the average family size is 3.29.
In the township the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older.
