Coloma Charter Township is a charter township located in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 5,217. The city of Coloma lies within the township.
The township is located in the north central portion of the county. Hagar Township is to the west, Covert Township in Van Buren County is to the north, Watervliet Township is to the east, Bainbridge Township is to the south, and Benton Charter Township to the southwest.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 49.3 km² (19.0 mi²). 47.2 km² (18.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.31% water.
Interstate 94 passes through the south of the township. Michigan State Highway 140 touches the northeast corner of the township before bending eastward around Paw Paw Lake. The eastern boundary of the township passes through the center of the lake. The Paw Paw River flows through the south part of the township.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,217 people, 2,111 households, and 1,481 families residing in the township. The population density is 110.6/km² (286.3/mi²). There are 2,599 housing units at an average density of 55.1/km² (142.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.53% White, 0.69% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 2.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,111 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the township the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.0 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $40,029, and the median income for a family is $44,859. Males have a median income of $36,231 versus $21,378 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,377. 5.4% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
