Cohocton (village), New York

Cohocton is a village located in Steuben County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 854. The name is derived from an Iroquois phrase for "log in the water."

History

The village was once known as Liberty, but changed it name to Cohocton when it was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

The village is by the Cohocton River and Interstate 390.

Cohocton is located at 42°29'55" North, 77°29'57" West (42.498705, -77.499208)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 854 people, 316 households, and 224 families residing in the village. The population density is 219.8/km² (568.2/mi²). There are 349 housing units at an average density of 89.8/km² (232.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.48% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 1.17% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 316 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the village the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $35,147, and the median income for a family is $38,438. Males have a median income of $30,057 versus $22,321 for females. The per capita income for the village is $13,660. 15.3% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
