Coffeyville, Kansas

Coffeyville is a city located in Montgomery County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,021. Coffeyville is home to online retailer Amazon.com's largest distribution center, leased in 1999. It was opened in a facility previously operated by Golden Books.

Coffeyville is located at 37°2'16" North, 95°37'35" West (37.037708, -95.626438)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²). 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Coffeyville is located at the intersection of U.S. 166 and U.S. 169. It is just north of the Oklahoma border, north of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

History

Founded in 1869 as an Indian trading post serving the population across the Oklahoma border in what was then Indian territory by Colonel James A. Coffey relocated here from Humboldt, Kansas, the town was confirmed and expanded by the arrival of the Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston railroad in 1871.

Incorperated in 1872, the charter was voided, and re-incorperated in March of 1873.

Coffeyville's most famous moment may have been the end of the Dalton Gang, when in October of 1892, four of the gang were killed and the fifth wounded and imprisoned.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,021 people, 4,691 households, and 2,847 families residing in the city. The population density is 602.7/km² (1,562.1/mi²). There are 5,550 housing units at an average density of 303.5/km² (786.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.76% White, 12.12% African American, 4.97% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.63% from other races, and 4.87% from two or more races. 3.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,691 households out of which 26.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,542, and the median income for a family is $33,180. Males have a median income of $29,199 versus $17,940 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,182. 15.0% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
