Clifton Forge is a town in Alleghany County in the state of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,289.
Clifton Forge was an independent city during the 2000 census. However, in 2001, Clifton Forge gave up its city status and reverted to a town.

Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,289 people, 1,841 households, and 1,146 families residing in the town. The population density is 535.9/km² (1,387.5/mi²). There are 2,069 housing units at an average density of 258.5/km² (669.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 82.96% White, 14.62% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,841 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 34.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.80.
