Clayton Township is a township in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 7,546.
Communities
- The Village of Lennon is partially within the township on the western border.
- The City of Swartz Creek is at the southeast corner, and has incorporated land that had been within the township.
- Much of the eastern part of the township is considered to be part of the Flint urban area.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 88.7 km² (34.2 mi²). 88.7 km² (34.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
The Central Michigan Railway runs northeast toward Flushing and, ultimately, Saginaw, and southwest through Lennon toward Durand.
In the late 1980s, the township's land was mostly dedicated to farming. A few subdivisions existed on the north and west sides of the township, closer to urban areas, as well as one in the middle of the township. The Village of Lennon and Swartz Creek Meadows, a mobile home park near the village, were the other built-up areas.
Since then, several large farms have been turned into subdivisions, and large houses have been constructed in more rural sections.
The township and Swartz Creek cooperate in operating the Swartz Creek Area Fire Department, which has one fire station in each of the two districts. The Clayton Township Police Department was formed in 2002 after the passage of a public service property tax by residents.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,546 people, 2,760 households, and 2,183 families residing in the township. The population density is 85.1/km² (220.3/mi²). There are 2,903 housing units at an average density of 32.7/km² (84.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 95.39% White, 1.13% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 2.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,760 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.5% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% are non-families. 17.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the township the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.4 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $53,062, and the median income for a family is $58,211. Males have a median income of $42,160 versus $25,354 for females. The per capita income for the township is $23,445. 5.2% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
