Claude is a city located in Armstrong County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,313. It is the county seat of Armstrong CountyTemplate:GR. The town was originally named Armstrong City, but was later changed to Claude, after Claude Ayers, the engineer of the first train to travel through the area. The movies, The Sundowners, Hud, and Sunshine Christmas were filmed in Claude.
When Armstrong County was formed in 1890, Claude won the contest along with Washburn to be the county seat. According to report, the tie breaking vote belong to Charles Goodnight.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,313 people, 479 households, and 362 families residing in the city. The population density is 296.5/km² (766.5/mi²). There are 538 housing units at an average density of 121.5/km² (314.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.96% White, 0.23% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.89% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 5.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 479 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.6% are married couples living together, 6.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.3 males.
