The Citroën Saxo is a car built by Citroën from 1996 to 2003. It is a small hatchback and was sold in Europe. Much of its engineering was shared with the Peugeot 106 of its parent company, Peugeot. The Saxo was criticised for looking too similar to the 106, and for lacking any traditional Citroën elements in its design.
During its development phase, the project was code-named "S8".
Many models have come and gone over the Saxo's lifetime, although underneath each different named model, e.g. Saxo First, Saxo Desire, Saxo Executive is one of the following engines.
By the beginning of 2002, the end was in sight for the Saxo. The more spacious and practical five-door C3 attracted buyers, and Saxo sales fell dramatically. Only the 1.6 VTR and VTS models remained popular. The Saxo finally finished production in late 2003 when the three-door C2 was launched. Its twin, the Peugeot 106, also ceased production at this time. By the end of the Saxo's production life its design was 12 years old and it had been left behind by better built and more spacious rivals, although few other mini-cars were as enjoyable to drive.
The car was particularly popular with young drivers, many of whom personalized their cars with alloy wheels and body kits.
All 4 Cylinder. 1.1, 1.4, and 1.5 Diesel.
Two models have remained since their introduction in 1998.
- Saxo VTR (1.6 8v 90 and 98 bhp)
- Saxo VTS (1.6 16v 120Bhp), based on the 106 GTi: Performance, 0-60 7.6, Max Speed 127 mph.
