Cineplex Odeon Corporation
|
Cineplex Odeon Corporation or Cineplex Galaxy LP is one of Canada's largest movie theatre operators, with theatres in its home country and the United States.
History
Cineplex was founded in 1979, when its first theatre complex opened in the Toronto Eaton Centre, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Galaxy Theatres was created in 1999 by Ellis Jacob (former Cineplex COO) and Steven Brown (former Cineplex CFO).
In 1984, Cineplex bought out Canadian Theatres Incorporated to become Cineplex-Odeon. A film distribution outlet, Cineplex Odeon Films, was established some time later, but it ceased operations in 1997.
In May 1998 Toronto ON-based Cineplex-Odeon merged with New York NY-based Loews Theatres (founded in 1904 by Marcus Loew) to form Loews Cineplex Entertainment. Within a few years, Onex sold the U.S. unit, keeping the Canadian operations and forming Cineplex Galaxy LP.
