Chulalongkorn University is the oldest university in Thailand and has long been considered to be among the most prestigeous academic institutions in the country. It now has eighteen faculties, a number of schools and institutes, and attracts the brightest and the finest high school students in Thailand. It is named after King Chulalongkorn, and was established by his successor King Vajiravudh in 1917.
Its campus occupies a vast area in downtown Bangkok, just behind the popular teenagers hangout Siam Square. The symbol of the university is the Phra Kiao, a royal insigna. Traditionally diplomas have been handed out by HM the King of Thailand, even though at present HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) delegated the role to one of the princess.
During the years 1973-1977 Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was the first member of the Thai Royal Family to graduate from a Thai university majoring in history.
