General Information
"Chop Suey!" is the debut single for System of a Down's second album Toxicity. The single was released in August 2001. The song's working title was "Suicide"; the band members claim the change was not caused by pressure from their record company. The words "We're rolling Suicide" can still be heard in the final cut's opening seconds.
Though it's rumored to have been written after Serj Tankian had some bad chop suey, the song is actually based on a poem by Father Armeni about the Armenian Genocide (all of the band members are Armenian or of Armenian heritage), especially in honor of those who were valiant enough to risk their lives in order to bring peace to the world and freedom to their people in the Russo-Japanese War.
The song has been parodied by SOAD fans Tenacious D in several of their live shows, first playing a gibberish version of the song and then suggesting that the lyrics sound deep, but mean nothing - which is okay because rock never had to mean anything.
