Choctaw, Oklahoma

Choctaw is a growing suburban town located in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma and is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,377.

While Choctaw is located in the geographic center of Eastern Oklahoma County, it enjoys relative prosperity on the fringes of the urbanized eastern edge of Oklahoma City. Affordable housing, excellent schools, and Oklahoma City accessibility makes this quite residential suburb a very desirable place to live. With several hundred new homes being built or planned for in the near future, the demand for retail stores, restaurants and services is eminent. The possibilities of future commercial growth in Choctaw are unending. Choctaw is proud of its past, but is focusing on its future.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.2 km² (27.1 mi²). 70.1 km² (27.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,377 people, 3,450 households, and 2,808 families residing in the city. The population density is 133.7/km² (346.4/mi²). There are 3,617 housing units at an average density of 51.6/km² (133.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.80% White, 1.64% African American, 3.70% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 4.32% from two or more races. 2.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,450 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.6% are non-families. 16.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $49,291, and the median income for a family is $55,437. Males have a median income of $36,540 versus $27,914 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,041. 5.9% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
