The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) (Traditional Chinese: 香港中文大學) is the second oldest of the eight universities in Hong Kong. CUHK was founded in 1963 when New Asia College (http://naweb.na.cuhk.edu.hk/) (1949), Chung Chi College (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ccc/) (1951) and United College (1956) were amalgamated. Shaw College joined in 1986. The University is the only tertiary institution in the region accommodating British style college system.

Albeit the name, English and Chinese (referring to both Mandarin and Cantonese) are both official teaching media of the University. CUHK is a comprehensive research university offering 53 full time honours degrees, 2 part time programmes, and 37 undergraduate level minor options. The provision of postgraduate level education has long been core to the University's strategy as there are 12 Postgraduate Diploma programmes, 132 master's level degrees including both taught and research programmes, and 62 Doctor of Philosophy programmes. All undergraduates, besides one major and at most two minor(s) at their choosing, have to fulfil the composition of general education courses, two sports options, language benchmarks, and information technology proficiency test.

The University Motto, in Chinese, is ( 博文約禮 ), which means "broaden one's intellectual horizon and keep within the bounds of propriety". The words come from the Analects of Confucius. The motto suggests both the intellectual and moral aspects are the emphases of its education.

The campus is located at the bay of Tolo Harbour just north of the town of Shatin in the New Territories. It occupies a total area of 1.344 square kilometres; with more than 130 state-of-the-art buildings and is the biggest in Hong Kong.

CUHK hosts one of the only two medical schools in Hong Kong, the other being at the University of Hong Kong. The Law School will admits its first batch of LLB student in 2006. Postgraduate programmes like PCLL, JD, LLM, MPhil and PhD will open for application not later than 2007.

The University owns its press, the Chinese University Press, by which wide range of academic literatures and journals have been published.

Ordinary undergraduate degree programmes in all Hong Kong tertiary institutions last at least 3 academic years, that is six terms, including CUHK. The University offers 1 to 2 years long taught postgraduate's programmes, except few 3 to 4 years taught-cum-research doctorate programmes. For master of philosophy's programmes, it requires students spending at least 2 full years in residence, whilst 3 full years for doctor of philosophy candidates.

The Kowloon Canton Railway train service runs through the University main campus in Ma Liu Shui, the New Territories at the specially serving University Station. There is a town centre in the central business district at Admiralty, Hong Kong Island, specializing for continuous study programmes, MBA programmes, as well as occasional academic activities. The University's Community College, offering pre-degree (Associate Degree) training, situates in the heart of Mong Kok district, Kowloon Peninsula. Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin, the New Territories is the teaching hospital and medical research base for the Medical Faculty.
