Chin'toka
|
The Chin'toka system was the site of the first true offensive action on the part of the Federation/Klingon/Romulan alliance against the Dominion and their Cardassian allies in the fictional series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This action became the first in a long series of twists and turns during the course of the Dominion War.
In late 2374, the Federation/Klingon alliance managed to draw the Romulan Star Empire into their fold. The boosted morale within the Federation Council led to the approval of a long-term offensive campaign. The planning of the campaign was assigned to Captain Benjamin Sisko, commander of Deep Space 9. His first target was the borderline system of Chin'toka. When Cardassian leader Gul Damar reassigned Chin'toka's defensive fleet, Captain Sisko saw the perfect opportunity to begin an invasion, but the Cardassian’s new orbital defense platforms pushed the timetable forward considerably. The allied fleet set out for Chin'toka and found the defense platforms offline and easy targets. Unfortunately, the platforms soon came online, and the allied fleet was torn apart. It wasn’t until the USS Defiant fooled the weapons platforms into thinking that their central power generator was a Federation starship that the fleet finally regained the upper hand. The alliance then proceeded to land troops on both planets, marking their first offensive victory in the war.
Unfortunately, this victory was not to last. In mid-2375, the Breen, new allies of the Dominion, made a devastating assault on Starfleet Command in San Francisco. This marked a new offensive on the part of the Dominion. Their next target was the Chin'toka system. The USS Defiant responded with a combined fleet of Federation, Klingon, and Romulan starships, but this force was quickly disabled by the Breen's new energy-draining weapon. The allies suffered devastating losses, and the Dominion continued their new offensive against their disheartened enemies.
After these battles, however, the Chin’toka system was relatively quiet. As time passed and the war ended, Chin'toka quietly faded into the history books.
