Chemung is a town located in Chemung County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,665.
The Town of Chemung was the original town in Chemung County and was formed in 1798. Chemung is in the southeast corner of the county.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 129.6 km² (50.0 mi²). 128.1 km² (49.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.
The Chemung River flows through the south part of the town.
The south border of the town is Pennsylvania and the east border is Tioga County, New York.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,665 people, 969 households, and 749 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.8/km² (53.9/mi²). There are 1,054 housing units at an average density of 8.2/km² (21.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.64% White, 0.53% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 969 households out of which 36.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the town the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $35,167, and the median income for a family is $37,885. Males have a median income of $29,844 versus $22,958 for females. - Beantown -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town on Route 3.
- Chemung -- The hamlet of Chemung is located near the south town line. The community is adjacent to the Southern Tier Expressway and the Chemung River.
- Owens Mills -- A hamlet near the center of the town on Route 23.
