Champion, New York

Champion is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,361.

The Town of Champion is in the southern part of the county.

History

The town was established in 1800 from part of the Town of Mexico (Now in Oswego County, New York) before the county was created.

Geography

The Black River flows along the town's east boundary. The south town line is the border of Lewis County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.7 km² (45.1 mi²). 114.7 km² (44.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.71% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,361 people, 1,675 households, and 1,190 families residing in the town. The population density is 38.0/km² (98.4/mi²). There are 1,906 housing units at an average density of 16.6/km² (43.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.85% White, 2.75% African American, 0.62% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 2.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,675 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,875, and the median income for a family is $41,415. Males have a median income of $35,093 versus $21,386 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,951. 10.5% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Champion -- The hamlet is west of West Carthage village on Route 126.
  • Champion Huddle -- A hamlet north of Champion village on the Huddle Creek.
  • Fort Drum -- A small part of the military reservation is in the town.
  • Great Bend -- A hamlet on the Black River in the northern part of the town.
  • Pleasant Lake -- A lake by the south town line.
  • Village of West Carthage is on the east border of the town by the Black River.
