Ceephax Acid Crew

Ceephax Acid Crew is an acid house and drum and bass electronic musician named Andy Jenkinson. Jenkinson is also known simply as Ceephax, which is a pun of the BBC teletext service Ceefax. He is the brother of Squarepusher (Tom Jenkinson), and this fact is often mentioned in any press article about Ceephax and his music, and also in negative criticism of the work. Ceephax and Global Goon were housemates.

Underground record labels Firstcask and Breakin' Records have both released music by Ceephax. The more famous Rephlex Records and even more famous Warp Records have both released a couple of remixes of Squarepusher by Ceephax. These remixes sound nothing like the originals.

Andy's music has various sonic styles such as vintage Roland drum machines TR 909, TR 606, analogue synthesizers, Commodore 64's sid sound chip, well known cliched copyrighted drum samples such as the Amen breakbeat, and most famously a Roland TB-303. There's strong melody in most of the work, some of it not of any living generation's style. Unusually for modern electronic music, rather than use computers for sequencing, old Roland sequencers were used. Also considered primitive by recent fashion but taking the aesthetic of 1980 to 1990's Acid House was the use of a four track cassette tape deck for recording.

Currently worth noting to electronic music fans is Aphex Twin's absorbing of Ceephax's influence by returning to most of this Acid House aesthetic on his Analord series on Rephlex Records.

Playing on Mary Anne Hobbs's BBC Radio 1 show, Ceephax played unreleased songs. The only way to hear these is through bootlegs or the underground filesharing community Soulseek. Some of Ceephax's music is still only available as poorly recorded bootlegs.
