Cattaraugus Reservation, Erie County, New York

Cattaraugus Reservation is an Indian reservation located partly in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the Indian reservation had a total population of 2,001. Smaller parts of the reservation are found in Cattaraugus County and Chautauqua County. This is one of the reservations of the Seneca Nation of Indians.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 66.5 km² (25.7 mi²). 65.6 km² (25.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.36% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,001 people, 703 households, and 480 families residing in the Indian reservation. The population density is 30.5/km² (79.0/mi²). There are 753 housing units at an average density of 11.5/km² (29.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the Indian reservation is 11.74% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 86.81% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 703 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.6% are married couples living together, 29.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.40.
In the Indian reservation the population is spread out with 35.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males.
The median income for a household in the Indian reservation is $28,713, and the median income for a family is $27,933. Males have a median income of $25,735 versus $23,438 for females. The per capita income for the Indian reservation is $12,382. 30.6% of the population and 27.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 41.9% of those under the age of 18 and 16.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
