Cato (village), New York

Cato is a village located in Cayuga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 601.

The Village of Cato is partially within the Towns of Cato and Ira. The village is at the junction of routes 34 and 370.

Geography

The village is located in a Drumlin field. Parker's Pond, formerly known as Forest Lake, is a small lake at the southeast edge of the village.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.97% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 601 people, 238 households, and 154 families residing in the village. The population density is 234.4/km² (608.2/mi²). There are 253 housing units at an average density of 98.7/km² (256.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.50% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 238 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the village the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $35,938, and the median income for a family is $49,219. Males have a median income of $37,303 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,511. 6.9% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
