As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,586 people, 644 households, and 446 families residing in the community. The population density is 40.6/km² (105.1/mi²). There are 704 housing units at an average density of 18.0/km² (46.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 95.59% White, 1.83% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 644 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 25.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.97.
