Carmel is a town located in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 33,006. It is the county seat of Putnam County6.
The Town of Carmel is on the south border of the county. The town hall is in Mahopac.

Geography
The south town line is the border of Westchester County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 105.4 km² (40.7 mi²). 93.5 km² (36.1 mi²) of it is land and 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.26% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,006 people, 10,847 households, and 8,753 families residing in the town. The population density is 352.9/km² (914.1/mi²). There are 11,283 housing units at an average density of 120.6/km² (312.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.60% White, 1.10% African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 5.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,847 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.6% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% are non-families. 15.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.37.
In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $77,406, and the median income for a family is $86,032. Males have a median income of $55,100 versus $36,890 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,368. 2.8% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
