Culture
Carbondale in known as a former mining and ranching town that has evolved over the last thirty years into a bedroom community for the nearby resort of Aspen. Nevertheless, Carbondale has managed to maintain its own identity as it struggles to balance economic development and the desire to maintain its rural charm. The town enthusiastically supports a broad range of community events such as Potato Days in October, The Carbondale Mountain Fair, in July, which attracts musicians, artisans and "hippies" from all over the west, as well as local rodeos and popular road races. Carbondale also sports an active outdoor-oriented community that takes advantage of the year-round recreational opportunities in the immediate area. Mountain biking, hiking, camping, horseback riding, skiing (Aspen & Glenwood Springs), Nordic skiing, gold-medal fishing, world-class climbing (including ice climbing) and kayaking make Carbondale a Mecca, but not quite, for outdoor enthusiasts. A number of locals bemoan some of the changes as the towns many opportunities have attracted a broad spectrum of new residents. One such local, Barry Maggert, is noted for being an advocate for reducing the town's appeal to diverse populations. Despite his vision for Carbondale, a growing number of people in town heartily support its burgeoning Hispanic population as it continues to enrich and broaden the towns cultural offerings.
