Amtrak's Capitol Limited is one of the two routes connecting Washington, DC to Chicago (the other is the Cardinal). The Capitol Limited (Train 29 westbound and train 30 eastbound) runs on the tracks of freight railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern and makes the following station stops:
- Washington, DC (Union Station)
- Rockville, Maryland
- Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
- Martinsburg, West Virginia
- Cumberland, Maryland
- Connellsville, Pennsylvania
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Alliance, Ohio
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Elyria, Ohio
- Sandusky, Ohio
- Toledo, Ohio
- Bryan, Ohio
- Waterloo, Indiana
- Elkhart, Indiana
- South Bend, Indiana
- Hammond, Indiana
- Chicago, Illinois (Union Station)
The train leaves its origination point in the early evening and arrives at its destination early the next afternoon. Between Washington and Pittsburgh, it mostly follows the historic B&O route along narrow river valleys hemmed in by steep slopes, including the upper Potomac, the Youghiogheny, and the Monongahela, which make for scenic if slow travel. Bicycle rail trails parallel much of this route, often on the opposite banks. The route straightens and levels out from Ohio onward.
